Kybella is a cosmetic injection that is FDA approved to tighten skin and permanently dissolve small areas of unwanted fat under the chin, abdomen, bra line, arms, and knees. Deoxycholic acid is the active ingredient in Kybella and naturally produced by the body to assist in the breakdown and metabolism of fat. Once treated to your desired outcome, repeat treatment is not expected.
No matter the cause, submental fat is difficult to lose and may not budge with diet and exercise, even after you reach your goal weight. At KSW Medical Aesthetics, Kim Suvak Warden, NP, uses Kybella to get rid of your submental fullness and improve your profile.
Deoxycholic acid is the active ingredient in Kybella that helps get rid of the unwanted fat under your chin. Your body naturally produces deoxycholic acid to assist in the breakdown and metabolism of fat from the food you eat.
When injected into the fat under your chin, Kybella destroys the fat cells and your body removes them over time, resulting in a sleeker profile. Once the fat cells are gone, they won’t come back, so you won’t need further treatment.
Kim Suvak Warden, NP, determines if you’re a good candidate for Kybella during your consultation. You may receive Kybella treatments if:
In addition to your aesthetic goals, your nurse practitioner also evaluates your chin and reviews your medical history, as well as your medication and supplement use. You may not be considered a good candidate for Kybella if you have an infection, you’re pregnant or nursing, or you’re taking prescription blood thinners.
When you come to KSW Medical Aesthetics, Kim Suvak Warden, NP, creates a personalized Kybella treatment plan based on the amount of fullness under your chin and your aesthetic goals. She reviews the details of your plan during your consultation so you know what to expect, including the number of injections you need at each visit, as well as the number of treatments.
In general, you can expect to receive several injections during your Kybella treatment, and you may need up to six treatments set at monthly intervals to get the best results. You should start to notice an improvement in your profile within two months of starting treatment.
Side effects are usually minimal, but some swelling and bruising is expected anywhere from 1-4 weeks after treatment so you will want to plan accordinly around improtant events. Your normal activities are safe to resume the next day, but intense exercise may make swelling worse intially or delay recovery. Typically swelling begins to improve around 10 days and can be aided with ice, compression with an ACE wrap, hydration, and hydrafacial with lymphatic drainage. Discomfort is minimal and can be treated with ice, over the counter Tylenol, and ibuprofen. Some loss of sensation to the treatment area is normal in the days to weeks following injection, but in rare cases can last months. Overall, the treatment is very safe and very effective.
Results and timing vary by individual and aesthetic goals, but are typically seen 1 month to 3 months post treatment. In some cases, improvement to the area continues even after 3 months. For those with mild to moderate treatment concerns, 1-2 sessions may be all that is required/desired. However, the patient will ultimately decide when the aesthetic goal is reached with the guidance of the practitioner. Consultations are always complimentary.
